So…You Want a Website! Here’s Some Helpful Hints Before You Start:

Color Scheme: Silver Lakes
If you intend to have a website that people you DON”T KNOW can find, you need to do a little leg work before you get started.
1. You need to do some research on what search terms or “keywords” people are using to find a website with the products and/or services that you offer. I highly recommend the following website:
WordTracker compiles search information and reports to you which search words or “keywords” are being used to locate businesses like yours. They offer a FREE 7-day trial. It is well worth it!
2. Now that you’ve done some keyword research you’ll need to consider a domain name. Please check out my recommendations about domain names click here.
3. You need to write a website that is geared to how your customers will find you (it’s not necessarily what you think, so get the facts first and at the very least a good starting point).
Once you’ve done the research, you now need to write pages on your site that are relevant to the keywords you want to use to get the targeted traffic you want. I’d recommend compiling 4-6 top keywords that you will use to create specific pages for each keyword. I’d also recommend using another 6-12 other keywords that are relevant to the same topics. Here’s basically what one of these pages should look like:
- Title of the Page: Keyword plus a few other words
- Heading of the page: Keyword in a headline
- First Paragraph: Keyword in the first sentence.
- Middle Paragraphs (I’d suggest 2-3): Other relevant keywords throughout the body of the page.
- Last Paragraph: Keyword in your final paragraph
Once you’ve written all of your keyword pages its a good idea to link between the pages as well as link out to other relevant websites if applicable. That way the search engines can “read” that there is high relevance throughout your website, because they are linked together. If you need help with this part of your writing find out more about our website copywriting services by clicking here.
You need to write a page that makes sense. It should be very informative and helpful to anyone who used this keyword to find you. You DO NOT want to cram the body of the page with your keyword! That’s called spamming. That’s a NO NO! For more on this visit our page on SEO (that’s Search Engine Optimization) and keywords. Click here.

4. Now you need to build a network of external links that link into you and some that you link out to as well. It is important that you link out to RELEVANT sites only!!! The more relevant sites the better, in fact 10 relevant sites are far better than 100 sites that are irrelevant. For more on this visit our page on link building. Click here.
5. Now you are ready to submit your site to the search engines and relevant online directories. Click here for more on Site Submissions.
